Most of my readers will know I’ve been a pretty big fan of the ACT Party in the past. They got my party vote at the last election, while National got my electorate vote. I liked ACT’s focus on personal responsibility, free speech, cutting bureaucracy and saying things most politicians were too scared to say out loud.

Which is why I’m conflicted watching David Seymour suddenly come out talking tough on immigration.

This week ACT announced a tougher immigration platform heading into the election. The party wants a dedicated overstayer enforcement unit, tougher deportation rules, higher English language requirements, welfare stand-down periods for new residents and an infrastructure levy on temporary visa holders.

On paper, some of it makes sense. Most New Zealanders understand infrastructure is stretched. Housing is stretched. Roads are stretched. Public services are stretched. We’ve imported population growth at a pace the country simply hasn’t kept up with.

Here’s the part I can’t square away…

Why is ACT suddenly acting concerned about immigration levels after being one of the strongest supporters of the free trade agreement with India?

Last week I wrote about returning to Auckland after three years away and feeling like I had landed in an entirely different city. People got angry about that post, but many others quietly messaged me saying exactly the same thing.

And honestly, you don’t even need to “look” for it anymore. It’s obvious.

Gas stations. Dairies. Domino’s stores. Courier runs. Supermarkets. Lotto shops. Even my local Irish pub has now been taken over.

Again, I need to make this crystal clear before people deliberately twist the point. I’ve got nothing against Indians personally. I love Indian food. I respect the work ethic. Some of the hardest-working business owners in this country are Indian. I’ve dated Indian women before. This is not about hating people.

But there’s also a point where people are allowed to acknowledge reality.

When the character of your city changes this dramatically in such a short amount of time, people notice it. They talk about it privately. They joke about it with friends. They complain about it online anonymously because they know saying it publicly gets you instantly branded a racist.

Politicians still act confused about why there’s growing discomfort around immigration.

You cannot simultaneously support mass migration through international agreements and then campaign on “getting tough” once the consequences become politically unpopular.

That’s the contradiction ACT now has to explain.

David Seymour says migrants should contribute, respect New Zealand values and help build the country. Fair enough. Most Kiwis would agree with that. But the bigger question is scale.

How many people is too many?

How much population growth can Auckland realistically absorb before it stops feeling like Auckland?

How much pressure can infrastructure take before quality of life starts sliding backwards?

These are legitimate questions, and pretending they’re taboo is exactly why parties like NZ First continue gaining traction.

And speaking of NZ First, I’ll be honest about where my head is at politically right now.

I always decide my vote close to election day. I don’t pledge loyalty to parties because politicians change quickly once they get comfortable. But I can already tell you who won’t be getting my vote: Labour, the Greens, Te Pāti Māori or any of the tiny activist micro-parties orbiting around them.

For me, it’s becoming a choice between ACT and NZ First.

Considering I’ve already grabbed tickets to the NZ First AGM in July, I think I know which way I’m leaning.

New Zealand’s borders

I don’t watch much television these days, but the other night I stumbled across Border Patrol. What I saw wasn’t just eye-opening. It was infuriating.

Episode after episode, the camera follows New Zealand’s immigration and customs officers doing their job at the border. Except half the time, the people wearing the uniform sound like they only just arrived themselves. Thick accents, broken English, halting explanations. You genuinely struggle to understand what they’re saying. These are the gatekeepers? The ones tasked with deciding who gets into our country and who doesn’t?

This isn’t a one-off observation. It’s systemic. We’ve reached the point where a huge chunk of the very officials meant to protect New Zealand’s borders are recent imports themselves. How exactly does that work? You flee your failing country, land here, get handed a badge and the power to let thousands more follow in your footsteps. The inmates really are running the asylum.

No wonder mass immigration is at record levels. When your border force is staffed by the very people it’s supposed to vet, enforcement becomes theatre. Selective. Soft. Compromised. Decisions get made by people with divided loyalties, cultural blind spots, and zero deep-rooted stake in preserving what makes New Zealand unique.

This country doesn’t belong to the world. It belongs to New Zealanders.

We should be protected by Kiwis who understand our way of life, our values, our standards. Not by imported bureaucrats whose first loyalty is often to their own ethnic networks or to the globalist ideology that got them the job in the first place. A border controlled by outsiders isn’t a border at all. It’s an open invitation.

If we can’t even insist that the people guarding our front door are actually from here, then we’ve already surrendered. Time to wake up before there’s nothing left to protect.

This raises a broader issue that goes beyond Covid policy. Trust matters. When a senior political figure is seen to contradict their own public statements, it inevitably calls their word into question across the board.

That brings us to the allegations made by his ex-wife. Hipkins and his supporters have been quick to dismiss them, but situations like this do little to reinforce his credibility. If the public can clearly see one instance where the truth is being bent, it becomes harder to take outright denials at face value.

Hipkins may hope this moment passes quickly. But for many, it simply reinforces a growing perception that what he says now cannot always be squared with what he has said before.

Let’s talk numbers, because reality doesn’t lie even if our courts do. Their X account had built a respectable following of around 6,300 Kiwis who actually cared enough to hit follow for judgments, lists, and the occasional judicial word salad.

Now? They’ve pivoted to their shiny new Bluesky account. How many followers there? A pathetic 260, depending on the hour you check. That’s not a migration. That’s a funeral procession for relevance. Congrats, courts. You’ve traded an audience that actually engages for a ghost town run by people who think “engagement” means circle-jerking in safe spaces.

But here’s the part that’s not surprising at all: Bluesky has become a notorious haven for accounts that openly brag about being “MAPs” – Minor Attracted Persons, the cutesy rebrand pedophiles use to launder their sickness into something that sounds like a support group for lactose intolerance. These aren’t fringe weirdos hiding in the dark web. They’re out in the open, posting flags, demanding “destigmatisation,” and pushing the same normalisation playbook that’s been tried (and rightly rejected) everywhere else. Whole threads, whole communities. Heaps of them. Treating attraction to kids like it’s just another quirky identity to celebrate with parades and pronouns.

Make it make sense.

Or actually, it does make sense when you look at the track record. New Zealand courts have form for treating sex offenders and their enablers with all the steel of a wet noodle. Light sentences, early releases, endless “rehabilitation” programs that somehow never quite rehabilitate. Slaps on the wrist for crimes that destroy lives. While the public screams for actual justice, the judiciary keeps handing out community service and therapy vouchers like it’s a participation trophy ceremony.

No wonder they feel more at home on Bluesky. X under Elon Musk is messy, unfiltered, and lets the public call bullshit in real time. Bluesky? It’s the polite, curated garden where uncomfortable truths get moderated into oblivion and the freaks get to flourish in the undergrowth. Perfect for an institution that’s been soft on predators for years.
