While the rest of us were just trying to get on with life and our mainstream media were busy hurling homophobic slurs, our spineless politicians quietly sold the farm. They have locked New Zealand into a so-called trade deal that will reshape this country for decades. Almost no one in the press had the balls to ask the bleeding obvious questions.

Thank God for Winston Peters, who is actually doing his job.

He is out there on Facebook demanding why neither National nor Labour is being grilled on what the Indian government itself is openly bragging about. Because India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry has already laid it out in plain English: a fast-growing Indian population here, hundreds of thousands already, hundreds of thousands more on the way. More students flooding in because, apparently, we have a shortage of people.

Add in visa rules that let them work, stay on, and bring the whole family, all on top of a weak job market, and tell me, hand on heart: who the hell is this actually working for?

We don’t need more curry chefs and Uber drivers. We need engineers. We need surgeons. We need people who build this country up, not add more pressure to an already creaking system.

Young Kiwis are scraping by in a brutal job market. Wages are stagnant. Housing is a national disgrace. Infrastructure is groaning. Yet the geniuses in Wellington insist the solution is to import even more labour. It is completely deranged.

And then there is the part they really hope you won’t notice.

India is touting a 20 billion dollar investment commitment. Not from them to us. From us to them. Over 15 years. And their own Press Information Bureau confirms there is a rebalancing clause. Miss the target and the deal turns on us like a loaded gun. Clawbacks. Penalties. The works.

We signed up for a massive, long-term financial obligations with automatic punishment if we fall short, all while being gaslit that this is some glorious win.

National happily waved it through with zero scrutiny, the usual corporate buzzwords about growth and opportunity. Trade deals should serve the people who actually live here. They should lift wages, build real industries, and protect our long-term stability.

This one does the opposite. It is a liability dressed up as diplomacy. A one-way valve sucking in pressure on jobs, housing, and infrastructure while we write big cheques to India with penalties attached if we don’t pay up fast enough.

New Zealanders are not idiots. We can smell a stinking deal from a mile away.

And this one reeks of a shitty butter chicken that has been sitting on the bench for a week.

The problem is, there is clear footage of him doing exactly that.

At the time, Hipkins wasn’t offering neutral information or simply outlining options. He was actively encouraging uptake, telling people “we need you to do that now” and describing the mRNA vaccine as “one of the safest vaccines you could possibly get.” That is not passive communication. That is direct advice aimed at everyday Kiwis.

Now, with those comments resurfacing, the attempt to rewrite history is hard to ignore.

This raises a broader issue that goes beyond Covid policy. Trust matters. When a senior political figure is seen to contradict their own public statements, it inevitably calls their word into question across the board.

That brings us to the allegations made by his ex-wife. Hipkins and his supporters have been quick to dismiss them, but situations like this do little to reinforce his credibility. If the public can clearly see one instance where the truth is being bent, it becomes harder to take outright denials at face value.

Hipkins may hope this moment passes quickly. But for many, it simply reinforces a growing perception that what he says now cannot always be squared with what he has said before.

Let’s talk numbers, because reality doesn’t lie even if our courts do. Their X account had built a respectable following of around 6,300 Kiwis who actually cared enough to hit follow for judgments, lists, and the occasional judicial word salad.

Now? They’ve pivoted to their shiny new Bluesky account. How many followers there? A pathetic 260, depending on the hour you check. That’s not a migration. That’s a funeral procession for relevance. Congrats, courts. You’ve traded an audience that actually engages for a ghost town run by people who think “engagement” means circle-jerking in safe spaces.

But here’s the part that’s not surprising at all: Bluesky has become a notorious haven for accounts that openly brag about being “MAPs” – Minor Attracted Persons, the cutesy rebrand pedophiles use to launder their sickness into something that sounds like a support group for lactose intolerance. These aren’t fringe weirdos hiding in the dark web. They’re out in the open, posting flags, demanding “destigmatisation,” and pushing the same normalisation playbook that’s been tried (and rightly rejected) everywhere else. Whole threads, whole communities. Heaps of them. Treating attraction to kids like it’s just another quirky identity to celebrate with parades and pronouns.

Make it make sense.

Or actually, it does make sense when you look at the track record. New Zealand courts have form for treating sex offenders and their enablers with all the steel of a wet noodle. Light sentences, early releases, endless “rehabilitation” programs that somehow never quite rehabilitate. Slaps on the wrist for crimes that destroy lives. While the public screams for actual justice, the judiciary keeps handing out community service and therapy vouchers like it’s a participation trophy ceremony.

No wonder they feel more at home on Bluesky. X under Elon Musk is messy, unfiltered, and lets the public call bullshit in real time. Bluesky? It’s the polite, curated garden where uncomfortable truths get moderated into oblivion and the freaks get to flourish in the undergrowth. Perfect for an institution that’s been soft on predators for years.

When Paddy Gower jumped into the Government’s Vaxathon circus, he stopped being a journalist and became a campaigner. Dancing around, hyping it up, pushing the message. That was not holding power to account. That was fronting for it.

Under Jacinda Ardern the Government poured millions into mainstream media. Call it the Public Interest Journalism Fund or whatever bullshit you like. The result was the same. The media got cosy. The public lost trust.

Now, heading into another election year, here comes the reflective tone. The soft regret. The “I crossed a line”.

People are not stupid. They remember the pressure. They remember being mocked by journalists and the media for asking questions. They remember being told there was only one “source of truth”.

There are people who followed the advice blasted out by politicians and compliant media who are now dead. Families who will never get their loved ones back do not care about a podcast apology.

If you really think you crossed the line, then say it was wrong. Not “I’d do it again”. Otherwise it just sounds like you are trying to win back credibility.

New Zealanders do not trust mainstream media. You helped break that.
