Four wannabe robbers armed with a hammer, tyre rod, steering wheel lock, and for some reason - a golf club, stormed into Hotspot Electronics in Manukau on Saturday evening.

Within seconds, their grand heist devolved into chaos.

CCTV footage shows the hooded group smashing glass cabinets before being met with fierce resistance from two shopkeepers - one hurling a cardboard box, the other swinging a desk chair like John Cena. Caught off-guard, the offenders fled with two phones and about $3,000 worth of property damage in their wake.

Owner Harvinder Dhiman said his children had left the store just minutes before the robbery.

“I’m still in shock. We just want to work hard and take care of our kids.”

Police are investigating, and the suspects were last seen fleeing in a small black car — and possibly nursing bruised egos.

Sunny Kaushal, chair of the Ministerial Advisory Group for Victims of Retail Crime, called the event a symptom of New Zealand’s worsening retail crime climate.
