Breaking down the petition and the level of transparency being sought
Parliament’s petition system forces complex ideas into tiny character limits. That works for slogans, not for serious reform. So this post is about spelling out, clearly and calmly, exactly what I am asking for and why it matters.
At its core, the petition is simple.
Quarterly, itemised MP expenditure reporting.
Not annual. Not vague totals. Not bundled categories.
Quarterly. Broken down. Easy to understand.
When spending is published once a year, long after the money is gone, accountability disappears. Quarterly reporting keeps spending current, visible and relevant. It also allows the public to spot patterns early, not months after the fact.
This petition will run until mid June. This is not a rush job. The goal is not to scrape together a handful of signatures and move on. The goal is to be absolutely clear about what is being asked for, and to gather as much public backing as possible before submission.
What “itemised” actually means
Itemised does not mean publishing business names, locations, or itineraries. That would raise legitimate security concerns and I am not asking for that.
What I am asking for is category level transparency that shows exactly what taxpayer money is funding.
Here is what that looks like in practice.
Food and hospitality
Instead of one vague line called “Meals”, expenditure should be broken down into:
• Restaurant
• Café
• Bar
• Pub
• Takeaway
• In room dining
• Airport lounge food
Travel Costs
Rather than a lump sum labelled “Travel”, it should show:
• Domestic flight
• International flight
• Taxi
• Uber or rideshare
• Ferry
• Rental vehicle
• Public transport
• Petrol
Accommodation
Instead of a single accommodation figure:
• Hotel
• Motel
• AirBnB
• Serviced apartment
• Short term rental
Other common categories
Additional categories could include:
• Mileage claims
• Parking
• Conference fees
• Event attendance
• Travel upgrades
• Incidentals
No business names.
No addresses.
No real time tracking.
Just clarity.
What this could look like in practice
Below is a fictional example layout to show the level of detail being requested, using **Rawiri Waititi from Te Pāti Māori as an example. The numbers are illustrative only.
When some MPs, like Rawiri Waititi, are spending over $100,000 more than their actual salary, the public has every right to know what that money is funding.
This is not about attacking individuals. It is about setting a standard that applies to everyone, across all parties, permanently.
Transparency changes behaviour. When spending is visible, waste drops. That is not ideological. It is human nature.
This is still a work in progress
I want this petition to be strong, specific and difficult to dismiss. That means listening.
If you have ideas on additional categories, better ways to structure reporting, or improvements that would make this more effective without compromising security, I genuinely want to hear them.
This petition is not about politics.
It is about respect for the taxpayer.
Sunlight is not punishment. It is accountability.
A huge thank you to everyone who has already signed the petition. We have hit 3000+ signatures so far, and that support genuinely matters. This is not a rushed effort, it is about getting this right and showing Parliament that people care about transparency. If you have not signed yet, it takes about 30 seconds. You can add your name at matua.news/sign and help keep the momentum going.

Good idea, Matua. I've signed it. Thanks for doing this.
