BREAKING: NZ First introduces bill for binding referendum on Māori seats at 2026 election
Just after I posted my article today saying the referendum has to be binding or it’s a waste of time, NZ First has moved fast.
New Zealand First has just introduced a members’ bill that would require a binding referendum on the future of the Māori seats, to be held alongside the 2026 general election.
The party says it is putting legislation on the table now to enable a vote that actually counts, rather than another round of political theatre and “consultation” that can be ignored
.
What “binding” means
If this bill progresses and becomes law, the referendum result would be decisive rather than advisory. In plain English, it would have legal effect, not just serve as a feel-good headline politicians can “note” and walk away from.
What happens next
Because it’s a members’ bill, it still has to move through Parliament’s process. But the significance is obvious that NZ First isn’t just talking about a referendum, they’ve put forward legislation to make sure the public’s decision can’t be brushed aside.

Luxon hopefully will not be in a position to deny! Congratulations NZ First. No doubt ACT will support you!
How disappointing Peters, Seymour and Luxon couldn't work something out on the Treaty Principals Bill. If it takes a binding referendum to resolve our differences, I'm all for it. Frankly though, I don't think it will get over the line.
How interesting that new initiatives only come out when the votes are being sought.
