On May 21st, NZME’s David Williams published a disgraceful piece of fiction disguised as journalism. His article titled “‘Lil Gay Out:’ Hobsonville Point Secondary School cancels LGBTQ+ event after protest threats” claimed the event was shut down due to supposed threats of protest. It was a lie. A lazy, calculated lie to stir outrage, demonise concerned parents, and advance a political narrative that no one asked for.
No such threats have surfaced. None.
, founder of , reached out to Williams directly before going public. She asked the simplest question possible: where is the evidence? He had none. She scoured the internet. Nothing. I looked too. Nothing. The only thing anyone could find were parents and citizens voicing legitimate concerns about the appropriateness of the event for children. Criticism is not a protest. Concern is not a threat.
Penny Marie’s full response, including her sharp interview with Leah Panapa on The Platform, was released on Substack today and it obliterates NZME’s narrative. Her deep-dive article can be viewed here:
In her email to Williams from NZ Herald, she wrote:
"Are you able to provide any evidence for the claim that protesters may have attended the event? We have had thousands of video views on our various channels, with probably 99% of commenters deeming the content inappropriate for school aged children. But I haven't seen anyone online that appears to be considering protesting."
His response? Pathetic.
"We spoke to the school and they made the decision to cancel the event due to the possibility of protests."
Possibility. Not a real threat. Not a planned protest. Not even a vague comment about protesting. Just a nebulous possibility.
This is the kind of gutter-level journalism we’ve come to expect from NZME. Inventing threats where there are none. Smearing parents who dare to speak out. Pushing rainbow-flavoured propaganda at every opportunity, no matter how dishonest the reporting needs to be.
This is not an accident. This is deliberate. This is NZME being a mouthpiece for ideology, not truth. They are not journalists. They are activists with bylines. The article wasn’t about reporting the facts. It was about framing ordinary parents as dangerous bigots to score cheap cultural points.
David Williams got caught. No sources. No evidence. Just parroting the school’s vague excuse and turning it into headline bait. If he had a shred of journalistic integrity, he’d retract the story and apologise. But don’t hold your breath. Integrity left NZME a long time ago.
The Herald should be ashamed. NZME should be ashamed. And David Williams should hang his head in disgrace. This is more ideological warfare wrapped in clickbait. And it’s time the public stopped tolerating it.

Matua thank you... as mainstream media exposes itself for its own disgraceful contribution to the TQ agenda (and so much more), all we need to do is hold the line.
If I didn't know it was being done deliberately, and if I didn't know the psychological impact of the media's collusion with those this situation, I'd feel sorry for them.
But, given the circumstances... I don't. SHAME ON THEM.
