Enough leniency: Indian who beat barman with knuckledusters should be sent home immediately
Aman Kumar, a 22-year-old Indian who violently attacked a barman in Thames, should be immediately deported. His brazen assault – putting on knuckledusters and repeatedly punching a man simply doing his job – shows he cannot live by New Zealand’s rules and has no respect for our laws or our society.
Increasingly, our courts are seeing foreigners like Kumar abusing the privilege of living here, committing violent crimes, and expecting leniency. Kumar’s actions were deliberate, dangerous, and unprovoked, leaving his victim with serious head injuries. Despite having no previous convictions, he has proven he cannot be trusted to follow our laws.
Courts have repeatedly confirmed the severity of his offence, and his appeals for leniency were rightly dismissed. Kumar has no strong family ties in New Zealand, and the impact of deportation on him is negligible compared with the threat he poses to public safety. New Zealand is not a safe haven for those unwilling to respect its laws.

Our immigration system cannot allow this pattern to continue. Violent offenders who cannot abide by New Zealand’s rules must face the consequences – and in cases like Kumar’s, that means deportation. Foreigners who commit serious crimes should be sent home, and the safety of New Zealanders must always come first.
Kumar has shown he cannot live here by our rules. He should be deported to India immediately – and let this serve as a warning that New Zealand will no longer tolerate lawlessness from foreigners.
