Isn't it time that the partly maori party was kicked out of parliament. Not complying and giving the finger to parliamentary rules re: their financial accounts for 2 years should alone be grounds for this. My woirry is they would then go underground and there could well be bloodshed if the leaders are not confined for their crimes of inciting violence

It’s been far too long since Te Pāti Māori disclosed their financial accounts, two years is a long time. If I don’t file my IR4 or IR3, Inland Revenue hounds me with emails and phone calls until I do, and if I still don’t, they hit me with penalties. Hmm… that got me thinking about something to write for next week. I’ve jotted the idea on my whiteboard. Thanks, Michelle!

Why are they able to even stand a candidate in this election?? They are clearly in default of the rules for a political party - to let them get away with this creates very dangerous precedent

Agree Skarlett, if they're non compliant then no candidates in the bi-election or next year's election if they're still outstanding on their party obligations. Just as it would be for any other party!

TPM is indeed contemptible - but enough moaning! WHO is the authority which should be calling them to account? Let's do it.

Enough of this shit. TPM are a terrorist organisation within our own very parliament.

Call them out and feck'n cancel them, for our futures sake.

The call from them to use physical violence is growing. Check your security systems!

Oriini Kaipara reminds me of those people who visit a new country on holiday and despite it being a shithole they return singing its praises and telling everyone who will listen what an incredible and marvellous place it is. I was born and raised in South Africa, home of the Economic Freedom Front (EFF) political party. I fled from there with my family in 1999 to New Zealand, and have never looked back. I am very familiar with the "red ants" (EFF fanatics) who dress themselves from top to bottom in anything red, including the infamous "red beret" aesthetic, who sing "freedom" songs at their rallies which demand the murder of everyone who has a white skin and especially "Boers" (Afrikaans speaking South Africans), who make statements that would fit right in with a militaristic parade in North Korea, and who demand the seizure of white owned land to be "redistributed" to the black masses. But I very much doubt that Oriini Kaipara has walked on South African soil. Rather, she sits approximately 12,200km.'s away from that country playing dress up like a 4 year old toddler, and making a spectacle of herself that would be hilarious if it were not so utterly tragic!

The irony is that people like Oriini Kaipara, while emulating radical and racist political party leaders of other countries, would not survive a day in those they try - but fail - to align their woke ideologies with. As South Africa has approximately 87 murders a day, and rape is a virtual national sport, Oriini Kaipara would be rushing back to the airport within hours of having touched down on African soil, begging and screaming to get the hell out of there. The same goes for other weirdo's, and especially the not at all wonderful Palestinian "supporters" who are living good and comfortable lives in countries that are safely tucked very far away from Hamas terrorists. Frankly I would love to send them all to their chosen idyllic countries on free, one way, tickets. That way we could purge our beloved New Zealand of the riff raff and get on with the business of ensuring there are equal rights and responsibilities for all.

I’m glad you and your family managed to get out of South Africa when you did. Reading what you wrote really highlights just how far removed Oriini is from the reality of the situation over there.

Yeah, thanks.

Nothing compares to a lived experience. It truly galls me to hear TPM speaking about, and trying to emulate behaviours and traditions of, country's they have never visited, will never visit, and know little to nothing about.

Maori are always quick to show their outrage and contempt for anyone - notably always non-Maori - who use their cultural symbols for purposes they do not agree with, and, that they have not been financially compensated for. The blanket that you wrote about Oriini Kaipara wearing with the "red beret" is a cultural symbol of the Basotho people who live in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho and in South Africa. The patterned and colourful Basotho blankets are more than just clothing. They serve as symbols of identity, pride and are used in significant cultural and life events like ceremonies and weddings. To see someone like Oriini Kaipara wearing one, and worse still together with an EFF "red beret", when most Basotho do not support this political party, is extremely vexing and insulting!

Thanks so much for providing that context around the Basotho blanket. I really appreciate the insight, and it gives me a lot more to think about. I’m going to look into it a little more and may write a follow-up piece next week with the info you provided.

That point you made about Kaipara wearing the blanket alongside an EFF "red beret, when most Basotho do not support the party doesn't surprise me. It definitely adds another layer to the conversation. Te Pāti Māori are true leaders when it comes to cosplay.

You are most welcome.

I believe that Oriini Kaipara wearing the Basotho blanket, and with the EFF "red beret", is tantamount to a Basotho wearing kākahu (traditional Māori cloak) with a keffiyeh (traditional Arabian headdress). Perhaps you may wish to phrase a question around how TPM would feel about this?

She's obviously taken Kiri Tamahere-Waititii's position to heart. I you haven't seen this video look at it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VDLdbiyKFk - an incitement to revolution if ever I heard one.

So, in summary this person is another Didn't Earn It selection to stand for TPM.

MMP has been the ruination of this country - most of our politicians as absolutely rubbish at their elected role.

They simply are geared (Greens TPM) to maintaining a public profile of outrage by any means necessary, while enjoying the pay and perks of an elected MP - something they'd never earn outside of Parliament.

Nek Minnit it's election year and if the current by-election is anything to go by the left wing parties will make all kinds of wild promises because the sheep will vote for them

For most of us who only know of these individuals through social media and not what they have done for their community, dress in attire that was manufactured by the people they hate and spew a language that shows they are uneducated. This particular person who is standing for Auckland, and I say Auckland proudly will not have my vote and I hope that most people of Auckland will only laugh and vote for the person who will do their job properly instead of bludging off the coffers of the New Zealand people.

I’ve said it before but I do think Peeni Henare is the lesser of two evils. Sure, there are other candidates in the by-election, but they don’t have a chance in hell. It’s really just TPM or Labour, and begrudgingly, I’d rather see Labour win… hate saying that out loud, lol.

Yes maybe the lesser of the evil... but they start somewhere....🤔

There is nothing we can do apart from sit and watch this carnival. We always thought Penni Henare was a pretty good member for the Labour party and he was obviously robbed in the last election. More recently we see he begins to play to the strange and dynamic electorate he is running for..........It might just be a bit of a bellwether for the next election.

If he doesn't get in, something is seriously wrong with the voters in that electorate.
