Now that Pocket is gone, here's a great alternative for accessing NZ Herald articles without the wall.
If you were using Pocket to save and read NZ Herald Premium content without restrictions, you’ve likely noticed it’s no longer working - they ended the service. The good news? There’s a workaround that takes less than five minutes to set up and gives you full access to all NZ Herald paywalled articles - and much more.
Bypass Paywalls Clean is a browser extension that allows you to read locked content on hundreds of news sites. While it’s not available in the official Chrome Web Store, installation is surprisingly easy if you follow a few quick steps.
🔧 How to Install the Extension on Chrome, Edge, or Brave
⚠️ This only works on desktop versions of Chromium-based browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Brave.
Step-by-step setup:
Download the Extension Files
Download the repository as a .zip file from here. Your download should start automatically or go to this link: https://gitflic.ru/project/magnolia1234/bpc_uploads/blob/raw?file=bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean-master.zip
Extract (unzip) the file. You’ll get a folder called
bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean-master
.
Move the Folder
Place this folder somewhere permanent on your computer - somewhere hidden away. Please don’t delete it after setup, it needs to stay there for the extension to work.
Enable Developer Mode
In your browser, go to
chrome://extensions
Toggle Developer Mode on (top right corner).
Load the Extension
Click Load unpacked.
Select the extracted folder that contains the file
manifest.json
. (the main directory)
Optional: Custom Site Support
BPC works out of the box with many major news websites, including the NZ Herald.
You can also grant extra permissions for custom sites or use the extension's icon to clear cookies or manage settings per site.
This tool not only works for NZ Herald but also supports many other major news outlets globally. It's a simple, effective replacement for Pocket and takes just minutes to set up. Better than that, I’ve just saved you $6.50 per week ($300+ per year)
Happy reading, without the paywall.
Does this mean I can use this to get past your paywall once my subscription ends? ;-)
Works!
