Yep. I put the blame on “marketing”. A quick glance at the Otago PDF you shared last week made it very clear that was their intention and NZ as a whole has been busily exploiting how wonderfully “maorified/green & contemporary” we all are and as we now learn that has left a gap big enough to drive fiscal bus through. As I always say leave Māori culture alone. It was always doing fine before the social engineers and do-gooders came along…..now with marketing involved it’s a giant turn-off.

He Puapua well on track when the health, education, police, local and central government are all using it as their song sheet. Would be ok if we believed it would make NZ a better nation.

Sadly this is just one protest when really these institutions should be getting 'Trumped' and having their funding cut. "Maori only' areas, 'Maori only' scholarships abound. I am also pretty dubious about how easily they hand out 'professorships' at university as seem to be plenty of those in 'Maori studies'. Compared to what someone would need to achieve to become a 'Professor in Chemistry' for example, I suspect the threshold for 'Maori studies' is not quite as high. Peer review for anything in that department would be an interesting process I imagine... How about 'referencing internationally recognised' scholarship? Sure they have plenty of traditions, but the depth of academic scholarship is not likely to be all that high. Jeepers, Professor Rangi Mātāmua specialises in 'Maori astronomy' at Massey. There is a 'Tui Moment' right there.

Dr Parmjeet Parmar is very good at all she does. She's the perfect person for this particular oversight role of universities and doesn't seem to miss a beat.
