New Zealand First has posted a new video to its X timeline titled “Winston Peters on careless immigration policy”, where party leader Winston Peters delivers a strong critique of New Zealand’s immigration settings.
It would be good if Winston actually started making changes while he's in government. But you're right, Luxon seems determined to bring in as many immigrants as possible – including their families.
I do think he is trying to - just watched his interview with Moana…holy cow she’s witty but not in the same league as that old man…it’s on YouTube Te Ao
A lot of people criticise WP for 'not doing anything' well, under the FPP system Govts could and did implement their policies.
With MMP it's so much more difficult as a minor party, especially when your major partner with more votes around the cabinet table is not going to support the needed changes.
Also 'pulling the pin' on the coalition is a risky strategy and can be used by the opposition to 'prove' the instability of a more centrist coalition govt vs the alternative.
We need to empower the minor parties by voting for them and raise the chances of being able to push through needed immigration reform.
Strongly suspect in 2026 the new coalition will have the nats as the minor party. Certainly hope so as both Winnie and David are now showing some real common sense. Nats under Luxflakes are floundering and have completely gone against their election promises of de-maorification..
Peters has politicked on immigration every election since time in memorial. I googled the 1996 election and its the same rhetoric. Same old same old. I know I sound cynical but I've seen him get elected by working constituents up because Tauranga came after Rotorua in the phone book. I kid you not!
NZF have had a strong 'controlled' immigration policy for some time. Back then they were also accused of being racist, however the current picture is clear - we need to encourage migrants with needed skills to fill our skilled workforce gaps where those gaps are significant and not able to be filled from the local cohort.
In addition, making citizenship more difficult to obtain and to include voting rights after 10 years would help deal with the issue of foreigners using this country as a waiting room to enter Australia.
At present after gaining permanent residency status gives them similar status to citizens.
Hilarious music 🎧
Good…his Coalition partners don’t seem to be on the same page though…Luxdern seems to want to turn us into a little Bombay…

So who on our behalf voted in favour of the UN Global Compact on Migration in 2018?
I'm going to have to have a look at the UN Global Compact on Migration. Thanks for your comment, Trevor.
Clearly more doctors would be helpful, but mass immigration? What's the motive, plan?
