Just when you thought National put an end to race-based policies and co-governance in public services, Erica Stanford’s new Education and Training Amendment Bill (No 2) makes you wonder if National has completely lost sight of those promises.
I agree with you - but education and schools have been vehicles for political and cultural indoctrination for a long time - that is why education fails children and young people. And the rest of us!
You’re absolutely right - it’s always been a vehicle for political and cultural indoctrination. I’ve got a few mates studying at unis across New Zealand and they’re constantly updating me on the stuff being pushed.
One friend, who works in a senior role at a particular university, has told me countless stories about what’s really going on behind the scenes. I’m not allowed to speak publicly about any of it until they move on, but I get near-daily updates on the nonsense happening there. They’ll probably read this comment too...
I remember when our son was in college and they introduced NCEA credits for doing the haka. His range of emotions was huge and at 15 years old he could see the negative impact this had on everyone.
This government seems to have completely forgotten their pre-election promises to stop race based legislation. Our kids are failing in literacy and numeracy achievement, yet they push the one-lens cultural indoctrination as if it’s the answer to the world’s issues.
This absolutely infuriates me- so much so I put in a submission against Erica Stanford’s policy. But given the government’s reluctance to make any sort of real change, I expect it will fall on deaf ears. Some days I despair of the direction this country is heading towards.
This is a huge point of contention for me. My adult daughter returned from Aussie some years back and opted to study psychology after being involved in the eruption drama at Whakaari/White Island.
Having a couple of degrees myself we discussed some of her assignments and over the three years of her degree she was regularly asked to acknowledge her white privilege. It totally infuriated me. History has been totally changed to teach a Maori victim mentality.
I Regularly buy books from my local libraries- in recent years they have sold or removed so many colonial era books - the non Maori perspective is being totally erased… I have the books to prove it!
Orwellian in everyway.
So when you are talking “education” best people start acknowledging that it is actually indoctrination
Such that now…many falsehoods are being rebranded as truth…
Nothing new under the sun - but having lived in OZ - a truly multicultural society- where each new wave of migrants become the new bad guys - I’m just watching to see Maori literally lose relevance as India and Asia become our new “oppressed” cultures in this land…
I’m livid over this. Stanford can play coy all she likes but this change enhances a ‘te Tiriti’ focus. Note the actual proposed wording - ‘paramount’ objective. In English, this means it is more important than anything else. Utter lunacy to promote ‘Maori’ focus in anything, let alone education in science etc. Stanford & Luxflakes are sell outs.
Replace section 9(1)(d) with:
(d) section 127(2)(e), which provides that, in meeting its paramount objective in governing a school, a board must ensure that the school gives effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including by—
(i)achieving equitable outcomes for Māori students; and
(ii)working to ensure that its plans, policies, and teaching and learning programmes reflect local tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori, and te ao Māori; and
(iii)taking all reasonable steps to make instruction available in tikanga Māori and te reo Māori; and
Why aren’t all children treated equally or given the same access to education? I voted for a National candidate in the last election, and honestly, I regret it. I may as well have voted Labour - the outcome’s no different.
And this is worse than favouring fractionally ‘Maori’ kids, far worse. This requires all teaching to reflect the scientifically bullshit spiritualism we know as ‘te Ao Maori’. No education system can survive when founded upon illogical nonsense.
It seems to be a theme in other countries where there has been a change in government but then they roll out the same bullshit policies as the last one. Its the type of policy & content that Labour would introduce. Watching the fully captured Luxon with the Ukraine president makes me think there’s something amiss. No guts in making the big calls as we expected on sooo many topics - beyond dissatisfied
I was triggered by hearing this initially but have just listened to Mike Hosking interviewing Stanford and it appears there is a larger look into all things treaty being carried out by Paul Goldsmith. Apparently according to Stanford references to treaty has been thru all educational policies for years and this isn’t some thing new she has introduced.
We're a bit saddened because we thought she had some promise but as soon as I saw a Facebook post I think about a month ago with her mouthing off about $100 million budget for Maori education and "Te Reo Shakespeare"....wherever in the world did that one come from?" It's tough enough in english let alone Te Reo....anyway I think she's cooked her goose. Truly, shame the Nats need some intelligent brokers but she's not one clearly.
This is disappointing and a real sellout. Mind you, I should have known better than to believe their bullshit promises. Looks like I got sucked in again. No more voting for National- ever!

It feels like National is just Labour wearing blue.

Whilst that may be true it is no excuse for perpetuating it…this amendment is an opportunity to stop that and drop references to equity
