Finally, some cutbacks. Goldsmith replied in his letter in August last year, the "news media companies have told us they do not want a handout, instead they want to be able to commercially bargain for the value of their news". I would argue that they need to prove their value through their ratings. He also stated, "New Zealand's state-owned broadcasters have operational and editorial independence, and make decisions at arm's length from the government". I had pointed out that they were so independent that they were under the influence of the previous government and should be defunded. Small steps...
Their putrid culture is bone deep and lived every day by the whole organisation. I think that nothing less than a complete clean out combined with some financial realism is required. Perhaps maintaining their funding if their audience numbers pick up might be a good start? I’m not optimistic though, the publicly funded state broadcasters in America and Australia are on a road to extinction, same as RNZ.
Good to have annual reduction, prob should have started at $18m per annum for next four years though. That would have really pulled them up, leaned-them out and refocus them to proper investigative journalism and presenting all sides so that readers/watchers could be informed and make up their own minds.
As they obviously cant (and have proved this) tell both sides of a story, they should not only have a little haircut, but the whole board should be replaced. If they still persist with one side of the story after this, then totally defund them. They are costing the country $megas and we just dont need them. It is 2 sides of a story or they are out. FULL STOP. I object to my tax money paying for this absolute rubbish.

Maybe rnz needs a huge shake up at board level, just like the Herald

Couldn’t agree more
This is a very modest prune of a fungal rot that needs a complete cut back to ground level…board/employees - the whole lot.
We pay for it - we are not amused….
