I found it interesting watching 1News on Thursday night, when Shane Jones touched on something I have been writing about for the past year.
During an interview with Maiki Sherman, she said NZ First was eyeing immigration as one of its key policy areas. Sherman then asked whether pushing such a contentious issue could create social disharmony.
Jones’ response was blunt and refreshingly grounded. With unemployment sitting around five and a half percent, he asked why on earth New Zealand needs more Uber drivers when we are already struggling to provide work for people who are here.
That line landed because it echoes a point I have been making for a long time. My usual quip has been that we need more doctors and nurses, not more Uber drivers and curry chefs. After being politely corrected by one of my subscribers, Ken, I have refined that to doctors and engineers rather than Uber drivers and curry chefs.
