Thank you for writing about "The Grift of Good Intentions", Matua Kahurangi. We - the tax paying public of New Zealand - know so very little about the cash delivery carriages that are pulled behind the charity gravy train in this country. In fact I believe few are aware that charities and not-for-profits are very lucrative businesses in New Zealand, and have been since 1940 when income they derive became tax-exempt. Examples are churches e.g. Seventh-day Adventist and Christian Community (formerly Open Brethren) and trusts e.g. Queenstown’s Shotover Jet, Taupō’s Hukafalls Jet and Rotorua’s Agrodome. Then there is Ngāi Tahu Holdings who are Sealord's biggest shareholders, and, Kellogg's and Hubbards who pay tax on their profits and fringe benefits while their competitor, Sanitarium, does not because it is part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Makes no sense, and is definitely not fair. Little wonder that registering a charity or not-for-profit attracts some uncharitable people.
I asked Brooke vV directly if she & ACT were going to sort out the charities grift, especially Iwi tax free status. I followed up by email. Received a standard politico spin reply. Disappointed.
I think there is no politician in New Zealand who has the backbone, stomach and/or balls to raise this issue in Parliament.
It would be interesting to know how many charities and not-for-profits are listed as owned by Maori and iwi in New Zealand. I have checked the company's register but it does not allow searches for this status. Of course I could request this data through an OIA but I believe the answer would be that they don't collect this information so not going to bother.
New Zealand First would likely be a better party to ask if they are going to sort out the grifters. Noted with shared disappointment that you received a "politico spin reply" to your enquiry from ACT. Thank you for trying in any event.
It's actually obscene that charities pay any of their staff that much. Agree there needs to be more scrutiny and tighter controls around spending in any organisation that's registered as a charity and receives large sums of taxpayer funding. In recent years I've started looking into any organisation I'm thinking of providing a donation too, so I understand what portion of every dollar actually ends up being spent on the target. Surprising just how much many of them spend on salaries and administration.
Yep. Any organisation that operates on taxpayer or ratepayer funds needs to be transparent about where the funds are spent, including all staff salaries.
Jesus is mike king part of the Tamihere whanau? He's certainly acting like a te partly maori voter. Wtf will governments stop giving away out fn money to bs charitys with no accountability. Whoever stops the maori theft and absolute bs going on will be getting my vote
Wow, I supported him getting money instead of the mongrel mob, now he appears to be just another grifter. Cut his funding until he opens his books and explains himself.
Friends .Romans, and Countrymen this will only get Worse and Worse unti New Zealanders Wake up and become aware what usless ,gutless vacuous liaing bastards we have in the main as politicians.
Our Parliaament is run like a Diseased Dog kennel , our media in all its form has no honor,or understanding of of its purpose, our PrimeMinister and most of his party has no Intregrity so what do we expect from a 30% of its population which cant get off it arse to vote.
Thank you dor writing about this important topic. Salaries for staff of 'Charities' claiming tax payer funding should be capped at the average wage or less. Every single cent these grifters get shoud be accounted for and scrutinised by audtors AND by us dozey tax payers. King has been getting away with this lark for too long.
Every donation to any charity requires scrutiny these days. Lots of ‘charities’ seem to now employ young ‘salesmen’ who accost every individual they can in the street or at business entrances. They all receive some kind of commission. I now only give to a very few charities and only when I see volunteers collecting, my $ will never go to a salary for a collector. As for untaxed ‘charities’ operating businesses, this surely is corruption.
The Gumboot thing doesn’t seem to pass the sniff test. Sadly this is the very thin end of a very long edge of Govt Contract scams. Iwi are beyond neck deep in this trough. Needs to be fixed, NOW. Costing us billions.
