Yes, they are a unique feature of the Auckland coastline. I recall in my youth Professor John Morton an Eastcoast bays resident was an ardent lover of The Rockpool and took people on tours pointing to the special link they provided to pre-historic planetary past. “You could say we evolved from the Rockpool.” He was a delightful eccentric and spoke of these little pools in an almost sacred manner. Good luck with your fight on this. The foe is incredibly ignorant and apparently unmoved by such emotion. There's fascinating profile of Morton in this NZ Geographic read here. https://tinyurl.com/c66hwpx9. He was a passionate leftie, environmentalist and church-goer but that doesn't lessen my respect.

A great article - thank you Matua for highlighting the urgent need for action here, to prevent our Rock pools from been totally destroyed of marine life…

I do not support anything titled 'Rahui' as it is a nonsense. HOWEVER, I do support a BAN on all harvesting of these rockpools and heavy fines issued. No fines = a continuation of these ignorant people stripping these areas. Come on government, get your act together! The longer you leave it, the worse it will get.

Yep, 100% - I don't support the word rāhui, but I do support a ban under Section 186A of New Zealand's Fisheries Act 1996.

What is it with nz's typical softly softly approach? Just make it a crime already.

This has the potential to apply all to over NZ for various reasons so protection by way of a take on harvesting (stops or take limits) should be able to be applied as required.

Well done again, Matua. Perhaps the "strippers" need to understand the negative impact they are having on their new homeland? Rather than being told they must not do it, which they ignore. I think a Rahui is not something they would understand or respect.

The selfish, ignorant few just don't care about stripping it bare. Even if they thoroughly understood the concept of once it's gone, it's gone they will still go out there and then just move on. They should put a ban on it with significant fines for anyone breaking it.

Another great piece Matua 👏
