Hear, Hear, Matua.

I still remember Andrew Hoani, one of the nicest people I ever met at Kaitaia College, who sadly decided to hang himself one day, for no reason any of us left behind could understand.

I like how Waititi can get all insulted by other people having a definition of what haka is but it's fine for him to redefine literally everything in NZ society to suit his narrative.

I'd say that most of his revisionism on what the chiefs meant when they signed the treaty is pretty insulting to those chiefs as it paints them as a bunch of dimwits who were tricked by some sneaky honkies.

That among all of the 500 odd chiefs who signed the treaty Waititi and co would have us believe none of them understood enough English to understand what the word sovereignty means seems a pretty derogatory and dare I say "racist" way to view a group that must have included some highly intelligent people who were likely very shrewd negotiators and experienced politicians in their own rights.

Hi Andrew,

I’m really sorry to hear about your mate. Suicide’s taken far too many good people - I’ve lost more than I care to count myself, and it never gets easier. That kind of grief stays with you.

What Rawiri doesn’t seem to grasp is that while the haka is his cultural right, it loses its mana when used as a weapon of intimidation in Parliament. That’s not a marae, and it’s sure as hell not a playground - though it seems that way most sitting days. There’s a time and place for everything, and theatrics in the House don’t help anyone, least of all the people he claims to represent.

You’re spot on about the old chiefs. Many of them would have welcomed the chance to leave behind the cycles of violence and cannibalism, not because they were giving up their culture, but because they saw a better path forward. Today, TPM’s antics feel like a parody of that legacy. They aren’t honouring the ancestors, they’re embarrassing them.

What a load of contrived, emotional nonsense. Why does the Speaker not close it down? There is no attempt to heal, but perpetuate endless innuendo.
