I have been told that every meeting at MBIE starts with a karakia. How many other govt departments are adopting such cultural practices? A cost benefit analysis may be needed?

I have heard the same thing, it's ridiculous.

And some schools have a karakia first thing and then after lunch. Councils have one before they open their meetings. Seems to be everywhere nowdays. Just becoming over the top - like hakas everywhere for anything.

You are so right Matua. Surfing, as I often do, I came across a site that was totally hostile to Seymour, as were the comments, and it made me think, why? What am I seeing, or not seeing? Our country has become sooo divided, and it's sickening!

Yes, well put by you and David Seymour! I just watched that interview which seemed to upset the woman who kept asking about the Karakia... Seymour was gracious enough with not outright mentioning the money part of this though, as it's not done for free... I was once at an opening of a new building and the Kaumatua was "blessing" absolutely everything, from the copy machine to the toilet...

Wild beach sand dunes in old gold mining country, miles from the nearest road. Some bones started making an appearance through the gorse roots. Possibly human. Cops notified, DoC land, so triggering indigenous 'safety' protocol. Indigenes transported in, much keening and shouting in maori at the right moments. Local agnostics and atheists all looking respectfully deferential and grave as cop finally got to work with a shovel.

Turned out to be bones of a calf that didn't make it. Never mind, it pays to be safe, everyone had a day out to give their carved tiki's a run, and a feed for all including the sandflies.

Karakia are superstitious nonsense and have no place in secular society. They cannot even be justified as ‘prayer’ as per our Judeo Christian traditions. Normally conflated with prayer but perhaps more akin to an exorcism which I’m guessing most folk in NZ don’t agree with! Go David!! You’re a lone voice of sanity at the top.
